At Portsmouth School Department’s Teacher Orientation on August 25, 2014, the Portsmouth Public Education Foundation awarded ten grants to educators from all grade levels in areas such as literacy, mathematics , the environment and sustainability, and technology . Awards were given in the following categories: The Barton Carroll Memorial Awards went to Joel De Marco and Kimberly Hancock- “Teen Choices- Life, Health and Literacy”. Katelin Kingman and Kimberly Hancock- “A Long Walk to Water”- a novel unit for World Geography. Jean Paul Arsenault and Kimberly Hancock- “Enhancing Literacy Skills in the Science Classroom”. The Jay Humphrey Memorial Award went to Lauren Thompson for Grade 7 Adventures in Geometry. The Raytheon Award for $2,000 went to Lisa Maillet, Lisa Zabel and Jean Paul Arsenault for Grade 12 “Stems, herbs, veggies and even shellfish”- an award for sustainability and the environment. The Colonel Ed Fitzgerald Memorial Award went to Nancy Brandley for “Innovative Printing Technology”. The Senate Legislative Grant for $2500 secured by Senator Christopher Ottiano went to Vicky Flaherty, Barbara Wright, Laura Backman and Liz Gill for “Math Technology in Little Hands: Dreambox Learning”. PPEF Awards went to Heather Baker at the Middle School for “March Into Reading”. Hannah Lancaster and Sarah Jakob for “The Layered Earth Computer Simulation Software”. Nicole Vanasse, Amy Walker, Ashley D’Ellena and Danielle Laurie for “Mac Minis for our Mini Learners”.
